Board of Director Job Description
Position
Member on the Board of Director for PLAN Edmonton. Under our bylaws, PLAN Edmonton founded in 2004 is officially known as, The Edmonton Regional Parent/Guardian Partnership Society.
Authority & Responsibilities
The Board of Directors is the legal authority for The Edmonton Parent/Guardian Partnership Society, known in the community as PLAN Edmonton. As a member of the Board, a Director acts in a position of trust for the community and is responsible for the effective governance of the organization. The Board of Directors is accountable to its Lifetime Members and their families.
Requirements
Requirements of Board membership include:
1. Commitment to the work of the organization
2. Knowledge and skills in one or more areas of board governance: policy, finance, programs, personal and advocacy.
3. Willingness to serve on committees
4. Attendance at monthly Board meetings (no meeting in July, Aug.,Dec)
5. Attendance at meetings of assigned committees
6. Attendance at the AGM in June.
7. Support of special & fundraising events such as PLAN Edmonton socials, annual Gala.
Term
Directors are elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting. Directors serve for a three year term. Directors may be released at the end of the elected term, by resigning, or according to PLAN Edmonton bylaws.
General Duties
A Director is fully informed on organizational matters and participates in the Board’s deliberations and decisions in matters of policy, finance, programs, personnel and advocacy.
The Director must:
1. Approve, where appropriate, policy and other recommendations received from the Board, its standing committees and senior staff.
2. Approve PLAN Edmonton’s budget
3. Approve the hiring and release of the executive director (ED), including the ED’s employment contract.
4. Support and participate in evaluating the ED.
5. Assist in developing and maintaining positive relations among the Board, committees, contracted employees and community to enhance PLAN Edmonton’s mission and vision.
Qualifications & Skills
1. PLAN Edmonton strongly adheres to its core value of family directed that requires 60% of its board members have a family member whom potentially could be or is isolated and/or lonely due to disability.
2. Strong belief in relationship building and the inherent power in strong social and supportive networks.
3. Previous experience serving as a board member, computer skills (email, internet research etc.) and rehabilitation credentials an asset.
Time and Financial Requirements
Hours per Month
Preparation, reading and research 1-2 hours per month minimum
Board and committee meetings 2-4 hours per month
Phone calls, emails, TYZE 1 hours per month
Special events 4 per year
Purchase an associate membership 30.00 per year if no other membership.
