Jane Haslett
I was introduced to PLAN when I attended The World We Want, the third Philia Dialogue presented by The PLAN PHILIA Dialogue on Caring Citizenship and PLAN Edmonton, held at Edmonton City Hall in March 2006. Encouraged by Denis Bell and several of my family members, I became a Board Member of PLAN Edmonton that June.
I have a brother who was born with a developmental disability, and throughout his life have been aware of how difficult it is for someone in this situation to become safely and happily involved in a workplace and community activities. In the 1980s, I became a teacher and worked with Special Education students in Ontario and later in Alberta. I learned that each person with a developmental disability is very different from every other developmentally disabled person, which means that the advocacy and support each person needs are different as well.
Since each PLAN network offers a very individual advocacy and support regime to a person with a developmental disability, I believe PLAN networks are a very effective way of adding to the support someone may be receiving already from family members and/or agencies in a way that will provide comradeship and fun on a very individual level. I believe strongly in the way PLAN includes the person with the disability in the processes involved with setting up her or his social network.
Professionally, I was a Special Education Teacher, and later a researcher at the University of Alberta, where I was a mature student and completed an MA and a PhD in English. In May 2006 I retired from my work at the University.
I have four grown children and eight grandchildren, some of whom live here in Edmonton and some in Toronto and England. My interests are riding horses (dressage, which I still do many times a week), reading, skiing, sailing, canoeing and doing volunteer work in the community.
